Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8
With deep respect for the vital role of parents in the religious development of their children, the Religious Education Program of Holy Cross Church is designed to assist families in handing on the richness and truth of the Catholic faith and in bringing about the Kingdom of God on earth.
Recognizing that faith formation involves a balance between content and experience, the program strives to creatively provide substance and sustenance for a life of faith grounded in the message of Christ, the need for community and the call to service.
Knowing that faith grows and matures, we continually invite parents to grow in adult faith and to instruct and support their children in ways that will ultimately strengthen their family life.
VISION
The Religious Education Program looks to a future where all the children and youth of the parish and their families are growing in faith through personal and family prayer, reading and study of Scripture, attendance at weekly Mass, regular reception of the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation, formal and informal faith formation programs, and involvement in outreach to the community.
MISSION
“To nurture faith for a lifetime in a caring, joyful and purposeful environment.”
Caring: It is a privilege, a joy and a blessing to help build a foundation of faith for the children enrolled in the Religious Education Program. It is our goal to ensure that all students (English and Spanish speaking) experience the love of God and feel welcomed, cared for, comfortable and safe while attending classes or other functions.
To achieve this goal, class size is limited to 20 students per class; each class has a Catechist and an Aide; office helpers/hall monitors are in both the elementary and middle school buildings during class times; students are checked in and signed out of each class by a parent or other adult authorized by a parent.
A fire drill is held annually; all children with the permission of a parent participate in the diocesan mandated Safe Environment program; there is adequate lighting around buildings; quick, healthy snacks are available before Wednesday classes; follow-up calls are made when a student is absent; assistance is offered to help students make-up any missed classes; every effort is made to accommodate special needs and circumstances.
Joyful: Using the cornerstone of Bishop Ramirez’ presentation, The Inner Joy of the Catechist, it is our goal to provide a positive, happy, upbeat atmosphere that promotes a closer relationship with God, a zest for reaching out to others, and a level of openness that allows new experiences to be more joyful, meaningful and memorable.
To these ends, we have new CD players and CDs for every grade level; processions, activities, banners and songs of praise for celebrations such as monthly liturgies and seasonal events; and ongoing training and support for catechists and aides that foster confidence and inner joy.
Purposeful: Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Faith and following the directives of the General Catechetical Directory and the National Catechetical Directory, the Religious Education Program at Holy Cross Church takes seriously its responsibility to feed the minds of the students under its charge.
The program has set new standards and expectations regarding the substance of the material covered in class and the variety of activities that engage the student and promote active learning for all types of learners. Harcourt Publisher’s Call to Faith in Kindergarten through Grade 3 and Silver Burdett Ginn’s Blest Are We in Grades 4-8, are approved by the Diocese of Las Cruces and offer professionally written, content rich, age appropriate systematic catechesis.
Using a spiral curriculum promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, both textbook series present a scope and sequence of foundational information that broadens in depth and breadth with each advancing grade level.
Prayer, Scripture, traditions, liturgical and community connections, saints and holy people, exercises to re-enforce and review lessons, applications to real life situations and seasonal celebrations form the basis of a well-rounded program. The enthusiasm, dedication and joy of trained catechists and aides add the spark to ignite the spirit within our students.
Additional prayer/retreat, sacramental and outreach components offered throughout the year complete a comprehensive and purposeful learning environment.
REGISTRATION AND CLASSES Registration for the 2009-2010 school year will be held during April and May, 2009. Late registration for the 2008-2009 school year will be taken by appointment only. All lessons missed because of absence must be made up at home (or if necessary, with a designated tutor) before a student registering late is assigned to a class.
Class size is limited to 20 students and classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. If no space is available in a class, alternate provisions such as home schooling or a tutorial, will be made. All students who miss a class are required to make up the missed lesson in order to receive credit for the class.
450 students are registered for the 2008-2009 school year. Classes are held as follows:
Sunday 9:30am - 11:00am Pre-K - Grade 8 & RCIA
Wednesday 3:35pm - 4:45pm Pre-K - Grade 5
Wednesday 5:15pm - 6:30pm Grades 1 - 8
Wednesday 7:00pm – 8:15pm Grades 1 – 8
All classes are held in the Las Cruces Catholic School elementary and middle buildings. As a safety precaution, parents are required to check their children in at the beginning and sign them out at the end of all classes.
